8 – Climb 52

Yesterday morning I woke up thinking, damn! I didn’t do anything new this week, what should I do, what should I do?

London is full of things to do but it all feels like “been there, done that”.
The sun was actually shining for once, and I randomly started thinking of when the Olympics was in London. That period gave me some of the best memories I’ve ever had in London – it was all in the O2 arena in Greenwich.

I was somehow lucky enough to get my hands on a Men’s Basketball Semi-Finals ticket, US vs Argentina and a Mens Basketball Finals ticket, US vs Spain. It was amazing and I met some great people along the way.

That reminded me of this climbing experience that they have at the O2. It turns out, funny enough, that the overall diameter is 365m and the height is 52m. That must be a sign, let’s do it! I am a major sucker for views, take me anywhere that has a pretty view and I am sold!

On their website they say that people must be “physically fit” so I thought ok great, it must be some type of challenge not reading into too many details.

As much as I wanted it to be, it really wasn’t – it is such a tourist trap, or maybe it is because of all the working out I have (not) been doing in preparation for my run next month. It was like jumping/walking up a big bouncy castle, definitely not climbing and the gradient eases as you get closer to the top.

I did however like the outfit even though it didn’t fit me, it gave me the illusion that I was about to do something physically challenging which made me feel proud… They also make you watch a safety video, the staff were great though.

The London view was the same view which we have seen a million times before.

“Obviously it was going to be a typical London view, what did you expect?”
I expected that reaching the view by foot or “climbing”, watching the sunset would make it a different experience knowing that you got there yourself.

Well… anyone considering this, how about you walk up all 38 floors of the Heron Tower and treat yourself to a drink at Sushi Samba instead, or just take the lift and enjoy.

A new thing is still a new thing though, right? I am excited for what I’m about to do on Thursday.

If you are not from London you will probably appreciate it more. You can find all the prices and info you need at http://www.theo2.co.uk/upattheo2
