49 – Making my own silver necklace from scratch

For week 49 I was invited by Streethub and the Turpentine in Brixton to come and make my own silver necklace. That sounded like fun! They must have definitely gotten my blog right because that is something new for sure.

In the midst of my exams I wasn’t sure if I should go or not, but I’m glad I did. The Turpentine is such a sweet little place and it felt so homely sitting there. It reminded me of an art class in school back in the day.

We did everything from scratch. From the sketching, setting up the saw, cutting, drilling to polishing. The staff were very helpful, especially with me being so clueless.

With me being me, I had to draw something complicated because that’s just what I do. I couldn’t settle for a simple triangle could I?Let’s put it this way – I now have newfound respect for jewelry makers. It takes such precision!

As I attended the workshop for my blog project and this amazing year is coming to an end, I wanted to create a necklace with some kind of meaning. I didn’t want it to be an obvious symbol, more like one open to interpretation. I will let you have a guess.

I’ve heard everything from a teapot to the letter M. Someone please tell me how this is a teapot?!

The symbol I created was a Phoenix in a flame which represents energy and free spirit, much like the theme of this year. At least when wearing it, only I will know what is represents (and you guys now of course). Well done to the rest for creating some great necklaces. Here is a little video:

This workshop costs £60 and is such a lovely activity to do as a group. The Turpentine offers hand-made goods with a particular emphasis on creations by local independent artists, designers and makers and also runs these kinds of workshops.
