So – remember the secret garden I stumbled across a little while back at the South Place Hotel? As promised, I went back for a legitimate peak a few weeks ago to try out the chocolate week cocktails (yes, more chocolate). This gem of a garden is hidden right in the middle of the City, by Moorgate/Liverpool Street station.
I just love the fact that the garden is heated and has a retractable roof depending on the weather. With the rainy London weather, it’s a great place to hide for a cosy drink. Note that since the roof is retractable it’s technically still outdoors, so with a closed roof and smoking allowed it can get quite stuffy – for those who mind! Thursdays and Fridays are their busiest days whilst weekends are very relaxed due to their location.
South Place Hotel constantly changes their menu with creative new cocktails, of course Chocolate week was a great reason to spice things up. First up we tried Cocoa Negroni (Campari, Amer Picon & Punt mes).
Our 2nd drink was the D&D Old Fashion (Bucker Bourbon & demerara supar syrup). This drink was infused with camomile tea and topped with bitter dark chocolate. The smell of the cocktail was amazing.
Last but certainly not least comes my favourite – the Dirty Duck! ;) The name says it all. These are chocolate filled plastic ducks, floating around in a gin cocktail (or Vodka if you choose).
The spirits used in these drinks are quite strong but the presentation and the way they’re mixed make up for it. All three were very nice. Gents – would you be seen sipping a Dirty Duck martini?
In November they’re transforming the garden into a ‘Game of Thrones’ style medieval land with a snow machine and winter cocktails, hell yea. Remember to go and check it out. This is one hidden gem I’m very happy to have discovered.
