Flat Three Review

By now I think it’s very clear that I absolutely love Japanese food and for those of you who didn’t know, I was born in Sweden. So when I heard about a Scandinavian, Korean and Japanese fusion restaurant I simply had to try it. I had never heard of such a mix before and was curious to see how they would pull it off.

Having been invited to review Flat Three, I took someone along for a treat on a nice Saturday afternoon. I visited on the last open day of the year so the restaurant was very quiet. Given the Holland Park location most locals were probably out traveling, lucky them! The interior is very bright and airy which I loved. They have spaces for larger parties and cosy tucked away tables for two as well.

We started off with a cold Kimchee Pumpkin soup with garlic and chive oil followed by a slice of smoked Angus rump with reindeer moss. Both were very light in flavours and nice to build your appetite. We ordered two juices as well which turned out to be very small. They were quite particular so I guess it’s more for the tasting experience along with the food rather than an actual drink, I could have finished mine in 3 sips.

For my starter I chose the thinly sliced Loch Duart salmon sashimi covered in Korean fruit wine. It was quite different from your average Japanese sashimi and was served in room temperature with delicious sauce. My main was a 28 day aged sirloin (which now is a 40 day old) with charred onion miso. This steak was my 6th steak in a week (yep, don’t judge!) and can actually say it was the nicest as well. I love my steak with a bit of juicy fat and this sirloin was the perfect combination of tender meat and fat. The onion miso complemented the steak very well.

For desserts we intentionally ordered one of each because we didn’t want to choose, obviously! The first one was a warm  Runeberg cake (traditional Finnish almond cake) served with geranium ice cream and sea buckthorn sauce. The cake was very interesting and the combination of ingredients worked very well. Having said this though, this dessert probably wouldn’t be my first choice. The star of the show was the apple pie (brûlée style), whole meal crumble and raw milk ice cream. I normally like my apple pie drenched in custard but it just somehow worked without and was amazing.

DSC_0483DSC_0486Although the dishes was very interesting and nicely executed, we both felt like the courses (and especially drinks) were very small and we didn’t leave feeling full. If you’re looking for a filling meal this may not be the place. However, if you’re looking for good quality, very well executed and unique dishes then it’s worth a visit. Where else can you get Japanese Nordic fusion food? The lunch menu comes at £33 per person (around £40 with service and a drink).

The food all looks amazing although I would want a slightly bigger dessert! x
