Firedog London Review

Its a new year which also means brand new and exciting restaurant openings! The latest one I’ve tried is Firedog in Fitzrovia / Tottenham Court Road. Firedog is a Greek and Turkish all day dining place that opened last month. I visited specifically to try their breakfast mezze. For those who don’t know, mezze means small appetisers – think of it like breakfast tapas. Being Iranian I am very familiar with this kind of way of serving breakfast. Naturally I was very excited to see such a concept being introduced to London.

I arrived a little late to the breakfast, only to find a beautifully laid out table with lots of familiar dishes. The interior is also surprisingly funky and I liked the artwork. The breakfast costs £18 per person, for minimum two people. You can’t feast alone here and you can’t have any avocado either according to their policy!

The breakfast includes the following: Selection of Firedog jams and butter / Lemon curd, clotted cream, organic honeycomb / Tomatoes, purple basil, olive oil / Cucumber, lemon zest, poppy seeds / Unsalted young cheese, sour cherry compote / Freshly made Lor (Turkish cheese) with walnuts, thyme, olive oil / Wood roasted tahini with caroub molasses / Candied pumpkins with hung yoghurt / Aegean olives / Sundried tomato and pepper paste / Grilled halloumi, feta / Sujuk, charred spring onions / House chilli eggs. All served with grilled sourdough and flatbread.

I loved this selection! Why have one plate when you can have such a variety of flavours and small dishes. You can really mix and match as you wish. My favourites were the chilli eggs, organic honeycomb and halloumi.

Firedog London Review
We also tried an interesting dish which was toasted brioche, chargrilled plums, clotted cream, pistachios and honey. Its quite a sweet and heavy dish, with a very unique combination of flavours. There were other dishes we got to try but in all honestly I would recommend the mezze rather than the main dishes which were just not as wow and some slightly dry.

If you visit, ask them for their special coffee which is stronger than espresso but looks like a tea! Firedog also have a selection of refreshing and fizzy soft drinks. I liked the pomegranate and blood orange in particular.

SUMMARY
The service was quick and the breakfast was nice. Its a great way to start the day. I would definitely be back at Firedog and again, I’d recommend to try the breakfast mezze rather than their individual breakfast menu. Do also try their coffee and enjoy!
