Where to eat in Hong Kong – Travel Food Guide

Hong Kong is known as one of the world’s largest food capitals alongside cities such as London and New York. The food scene is ever evolving and is unlike any other city I’ve seen in terms of creativity. Before visiting I had done my fair share of research on where to eat in Hong Kong and what food not to miss as a tourist. Most likely you’ll only have a few days there so I’ve put together my own tried and tested guide on where to eat in Hong Kong.

Egg Tart at Honolulu Cofffee Shop.
The famous Hong Kong egg tart is very similar to our equivalent of a custard tart and looks the same as a Portuguese Nata. It consists of an outer pastry crust which is filled with baked egg custard. Unlike the Nata, the filling is thicker and tastes almost like sweet omelette. Warning, the actual coffee shop doesn’t have great reviews but their tarts are known to be one of the best. Its best to visit in the morning when they are freshly made. Consider it a quick bite on the go.

Pineapple bun and milk tea mixed with coffee at Kam Wah Cafe
A pineapple bun is a sweet bun which is mainly popular around Hong Kong and Canada. The bun is crunchy and resembles a pineapple on the outside whilst the inside is filled with sweet bread. Locals say its the best at Kam Wah Cafe. I don’t have any other buns to compare it to but it was pretty damn good! Staff were very welcoming and spoke good English. Do also try their milk tea with coffee.

Price of bun: £0.86 / $1

A classic Bao at Little Bao
A bao is a famous Asian type of steamed bun with various sorts of fillings, normally chicken, pork or vegetables. Little bao does amazing food in a counter style restaurant. They don’t take reservations so be prepared to wait. The prices are pretty reasonable considering it’s location in Soho, the prime nightlife district.

Try the pork bao, the eggplant starter and also the green tea ice cream bun. After dinner you can have a drink in the lovely Soho. This area was full of expats, tourists and locals! I loved the quirky looking streets.

Price per bao: £9.50 / $11.30

Dine at the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant Tim Ho Wan.
There is an excessive amount of dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong as you can imagine. I’m sure locals will have a million suggestions for which restaurant is the best in Hong Kong. As a tourist though, you should put Tim Ho Wan on your “to food” list as I call it. This way you’re guaranteed to leave Hong Kong having tried great dim sums from a restaurant that holds a Michelin star.

Most dishes cost between £1-£2.50 / $1.30-$3

This makes me miss Hong Kong and its enticing restaurants, there are so many options it is really hard to pick and choose. We loved our dinners at Yum Cha (so tasty and cute at the same time!), Amber, Lung King Heen, Tin Lung Heen and L’Atelier. The Cupping Room, Grassoots and Classified had really good breakfast options and a great coffee! Again, too much food, never enough time.
