KUBU AT RITZ MANDAPA UBUD REVIEW

Last year, my sister had come all the way to Bali for my birthday. In return I wanted to treat her to something special before she left, something which turned out to be one of the most memorable meals we’ve ever had. I had seen the photos of Kubu at Mandapa Ritz and read the amazing reviews, but nothing would prepare me for the real life dining experience.

It’s VIP treatment from the moment you step on to the Ritz Carlton premises. The resort has a very mysterious entrance with security guards outside and is also located a bit further out from the town centre. The security guards take your name, then call for a buggie to come and pick you up to take you right down to the Ayung riverside where Kubu is located. The drive is a couple of minutes and if you visit at night it’s dark so the anticipation really builds up!

We finally arrived at Kubu where you can dine in one out of nine private cocoons. You hear the sound of the river and soak in the atmosphere as you wait for your food.

We had the Chef’s Collection menu, priced at 1,150 per person (£60). The meal started with freshly baked bread and Foie Gras Parfait served in a cute nest with a Granny Smith, citrus and almond foam on the side. This was probably one of my favourite dishes.

For mains we had the following, all which were excellent: Tender tuna “crudo” served with burrata, smoked lettuce and tomato essence /  Lobster Ravioli with fennel and chardonnay / Hokkaido Scallop with smoked lemongrass, parsnip, kaffir lime which was served taco style / Wagyu Beef Mb7 Rib eye with cheek, celeriac, truffle.

The main courses were followed by a Cherry Chocolate Fondant, containing chocolate mousse and Amaretto di Saronno ice cream. Last but not least came the Petit Fours to finish off the meal!

Yes it’s pricy in Bali standards but it’s a dining experience like no other. This restaurant is so private, romantic and perfect if you want to pop the question! (hint, hint). The service was great and personal.

I highly recommend a visit to Kubu. Definitely remember to book well in advance!
