REVIEW: ROUX AT THE LANDAU

A couple of months back I attended the relaunch of Roux at The Landau, a beautiful gourmet French restaurant located inside of London’s Langham Hotel. Their new concept is informal yet luxurious, with a larger focus on ingredients while dining. Since I had a little taster of the food and met Mr Michel Roux Jr himself, I was excited to return back to explore the full menu.

The entrance to the restaurant is on Regent Street, separate from the main hotel entrance. From the moment you walk in you’re welcomed by friendly staff who go out of their way to make your dining experience special. The menu is diverse and focuses again on fresh ingredients, some which are on display at the main counter of the restaurant.

We started with fresh sourdough bread. The taste was subtly sour which went nicely with the salty cone shaped butter. The texture was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

As a part of our appetisers we also had fried cheese balls which were delicious. It was perfectly balanced with a light batter and taste of strong melted cheese. This was definitely one of my favourite dishes I had all night and would highly recommend it.

Every dish at Roux at Landaux is presented with such detail. The tartare was no exception, served in a Caviar tin. It was topped with a delicious sauce and black caviar. The sauce had a thick texture which tasted of sweet mustard and lime, and interestingly it was a combination of tangy, sweet and sour. Needless to say it went very well with the fish.

Next up for the starter we had the seared foie gras, rabbit and pig’s trotters on toast surrounded by pickled vegetables (£18). The foie gras was very fatty and tasty. It was the perfect texture in my opinion and all the components of the dish went well together.

Our second starter was the XL Orkney scallop topped with oscietra caviar (£21). The scallop was perfectly cooked and had a nice juicy texture. It was served in a light Ivy House farm beurre blanc sauce. It was quite pricey though for one scallop.

For my main course I chose the grilled beef fillet (£38). I had asked for a medium rare, however I found the steak to be almost well done with only some parts medium rare. As such this was the only dish I wasn’t full happy with. However I enjoyed the gravy and asparagus that was served with the steak. Alongside the steak I also ordered the bone marrow mash which was a solid 10/10.

Last but not least, for desserts I had the Manjari moelleux, cardomom ice cream and caramel cloud (£8). This dessert had the texture of a mousse with a sweet ice cream in the middle. I highly enjoyed it and it was the perfect way to finish off a lovely evening.

I really enjoyed our meal at Roux at The Landau. The prices are on the high range and thus I’d recommend this place more as a special occasion meal. The price however does directly reflect the quality that you get from the overall experience. Every element is well thought out from the presentation, ingredients, preparation, staff and atmosphere.
