THE CHEAPEST MICHELIN STAR MEAL IN THE WORLD – REVIEW OF Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle

When I think of anything Michelin Star related, I think of ££££. Whilst in Asia, I discovered that a Michelin Star doesn’t necessarily mean an expensive meal. I was initially impressed by Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong. Then along came Singapore’s Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle and stole the spotlight as the world’s cheapest Michelin Star meal.

Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle is a simple little hawker stall which has now also opened a restaurant following all of its success.  At first glance the stall wouldn’t catch your attention if it wasn’t for all the queues. It’s located inside of the Chinatown Complex on the second floor.

Chan Hon Meng’s signature chicken rice costs only S$2, the equivalent of £1.10!

Luckily I visited after the lunchtime rush whilst there was still some chicken left and I waited 20 minutes. The wait can sometimes be over an hour. As you receive the chicken, you can add chilis and sauces to your dish by the stand. However the chicken rice by itself is excellent. The chicken skin is perfectly crispy, nicely glazed and the meat is tender, however not as juicy as imagined. There’s plenty of delicious sauce from the chicken on the rice as well, which brings the flavour to another level. Yum, Yum, Yum!

I personally don’t think it’s overrated because you simply can’t go wrong with a S$2 chicken dish! (unless it goes WRONG if you know what I mean, but the chicken here is very fresh!). There is no room for complaints on this one. It’s excellent value as long as you don’t have to queue for an hour.

Hawker Chan visited London earlier in the year, so I took the opportunity to compare the same dish – $2 vs £6! Check it out below.
