17 – 1st day of volunteering

Last week I had my first day of volunteering at a children’s hospital in London and I absolutely loved it. The reason that I started to volunteer is because I wanted to do something worthwhile with my time – I’m sure many of you know the feeling. Being busy with work it is difficult to squeeze in extra activities but I found a weekend role which will be ongoing throughout the year. My role is mainly to provide play activities for patients and their siblings.

What I found the most astonishing on my first day was their spirits. If us grown-ups were to be ill, most of us would sit there and feel sorry for ourselves but not these kids! It almost felt as if I wasn’t in a hospital environment and if that’s how the kids felt, then mission accomplished. If we help to make their day better, even just a little, then that goes a long way. I felt like a kid again myself, playing long lost games like Twister, Uno and Guess Who? – They had to teach me how to play.

Not to mention, it was extremely refreshing to meet new people outside of my regular work and friends circle. The people were great fun, all very different yet like minded. I really enjoyed the experience and I’m looking forward to getting to know the kids as well as my fellow volunteers.

I really encourage people to volunteer because it does make big a difference, not only for others but also for yourself. Plenty of positions can be found in your area of interest at http://www.do-it.org.uk/ – check it out.

Nice! Very cool thing to add to your 52 New Things to do this year, and even better that you got such a great sense of satisfaction doing something good for someone else.
